Mission of the Chair of Building Realization and Robotics is to extend the traditional core competences of design and build, broadening the activity area of future graduates, professionals and creating new employment opportunities. Located at Technical University of Munich within the Bavarian high tech cluster – in which the chair is well connected – the chair functions as an incubator for the development and socio-technically integrated and building related technologies.
The future construction sector will expand to new business fields by absorbing advanced technologies from various disciplines. Its success will depend on its innovation leap ability of the complete value chain of the artefactual engineering and built environment by embedding ICT, automation, robotics and services.
The Chair of Building Realization and Robotics from the Technical University of Munich is responsible for novel ICT implementation into furniture within this Project. The unobtrusive implementation of various sensors, as well as robotic aspects, into the furniture aims to increase the self-sufficiency and independency of the user. The Chair possesses a 1:1 scaled 32 m²˛ test apartment, where the developed prototypes can be tested by invited elderly. Thereby the user feedback can be considered in a very early development stage of the prototypes.
Prof. Dr.-Ing./Univ.Tokio Thomas Bock studied at the University of Stuttgart Architecture. While he was studying, he worked under Larry Bell for the NASA tech house (1979). At this time, he worked as a pilot in a side job. In addition, he was working in Tehran for an Iran construction company, and worked as a taxi pilot in Dallas. He received a Fulbright Scholarship for graduate studies at IIT in Chicago. After he finished his architecture study, he started his office, and designed as well as supervised a mixed use building in Barcelona. Afterwards, he went to Japan Tokyo, where he received a Monbusho Scholarship and later his PhD from the University of Tokyo. After his PhD-graduation, he worked on a „poste rouge” at CNRS in Paris, where he established a national committee on construction robotics, and became an associate professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, before he established as full professor at the Technical University Munich the Chair for Building Realization and Robotics. His research activities center on automation and robotics in construction, including the implementation of ICT solutions for a healthy and independent lifestyle.
Dr.-Ing. Jörg Güttler is a research associate of the Chair for Building Realization and Robotics at the Technical University of Munich. After he graduated to Master of Medical Engineering at the University of Applied Science Ulm, he joined the research group of Prof. Bock as research associate and graduated 2019 with the dissertation “Development of an Ambient Health Monitoring System for a Self-Sufficient and Independent Life in Old Age”. His research interests at the chair comprise Ambient/Active Assisted Living, remote health monitoring, telehealth applications, embedded sensors, medical devices, wearable robotics, and human-machine interfaces.
